Unknown, never estimated
When a number cannot be measured honestly, the product shows it as unknown and says why. It does not fill the gap with an estimate. For example, the hour of an upload that is only dated by relative text, or a test winner whose thumbnail was never captured, is shown as unknown.
What it cannot see
- Test results. YouTube reports the winning metric only to the creator. You see which version stayed, not by how much or why.
- Every variant. A version YouTube rarely serves may go unseen for a while. The recorded variants are the ones that were seen, not necessarily all of them.
- The exact start of a test. A test is known from the first cycle that disagrees.
- Uploads with no known date. A video that is not in the Atom feed and whose date could not be read is not probed for A/B tests.
- Older uploads. Probing stops at 21 days.
- Private videos. A video made private is not reported as such.
- The past. Nothing is recorded before you start tracking a channel, and no YouTube interface returns a video's past variants.
- Channels nobody tracks. Only channels on a watchlist are observed on a schedule.
